The Cat's Table and Insel Kreide

Cat's table - This is a book that will stir your memories of those moments which has shaped you of who you are now. The novel takes place on a ship, as a young boy named Michael sails from Sri Lanka to England. The novel is filled with series of vignettes from the main character's life. During the voyage, Michael meets two other boys of his age and they cause mischief of various kinds and cross paths with a diverse cast of characters at the table where they dine – The Cat’s Table. The author surprisingly notes at the end that this is a novel and not a memoir. This is not a traditional “coming of age” story. In my opinion, it takes place over very short period of time; the bulk of the action only takes place over the three week journey in the ocean liner. However, the story does include brief “pauses” that takes us into Michael’s future (the general present/recent past) and show the way in which that short period of time really did shape his life. It is in this context that the novel becomes very personal. We are drawn into his life to share the way in which this brief period from his past formed his present. Many of us have a story similar to Michael’s time on the "ship", a time where we were living in the moment, enjoying our life, meeting people, not thinking about how events, although exciting, might reverberate through the years.

Insel Kreide - Pours a clear, deep golden with a large, foamy, lasting head and visible carbonation that smells of light doughy malt, mildly spicy yeast esters, white grape and a grassy/herbal note, with a certain tartness. Taste is biscuity malt, fruity/spicey yeast esters and grassy/citrus hops, with notes of white grape, green apple, coriander and lime. Finishes crisp and dry and some tart grape notes lingering in the aftertaste.
